Comments:

Two pretty massive joints to start things off. If there were any doubts, Jigga displays that King Of NY crown once again on D.O.A., lamenting the current state of mainstream hip hop and its reliance on Auto-Tune. The track knocks hard, but more importantly, it sounds like Jay-Z has some of that BK swagger back that was evident during his Blueprint era. And new Roc Nation signee Wale drops arguably his most commercial joint with Chillin’, but damn does it work. Original but with an old-school feel, accessible without sounding played out. Shout out to Gary Glitter on these first two tracks, haha.

Sean P makes two appearances here also, with the newest hip hop supergroup Random Axe (himself, Black Milk, and Guilty Simpson) on Monster Babies (Black Milk is on some other shit on this one!) and on the Khrysis produced banger TKO alongside Justus League vets Chaundon, Phonte, and Leggy Hendrix. Sandwiched in between is Double Barrel, the title track off Marco Polo & Torae’s new LP, which is straight heat front to back. Revolution scratches on the hook are incredible, and Marco’s horns sound right out of 1995. Love it.

Grand Royal, Bird’s Eye View, and Change Gon’ Come have been circulating for a minute, but they are all pretty new to me and all three are real dope tracks. Primo hits the top 10 for a second straight time (surprise) on the CNN cut, Soulstice and Kev Brown ride that laid back, bass heavy vibe nicely, and The Kickdrums give Saigon a nice upbeat backdrop to spit a autobiographical tale from the hood.

And finally, a couple crazy remixes round things out. Nefarious is a new name to me, but hearing this incredibly dope (and perfect fit for Little Brother) remix I’ll be checking for more of his stuff. And Chuck Inglish gives one of Drake’s most popular tracks off So Far Gone the same treatment, and adds a verse of his own at the end. See how long it takes you to recognize the sample he uses- anything more than 20 seconds and you need to do your homework young scrapper. It’s always risky to remix an already dope track, so kudos to these two producers for making their new interpolations work.

*Spin This! going up tonight after I get home from work. One!*

Update coming soon/random thoughts & comments

Posted in Misc on June 8th, 2009 by GMR – Be the first to comment

What up y’all. Big update coming soon I promise. HUGE new songs from Jay-Z, Wale, Drake, and much more.

Also, I decided to re-name the “New Jointz” section to “Spin This!” because I kept seeing the word “jointz” in my head and the z at the end bothered me. Ridiculous, I know. But I think “Spin This!” is better anyways.

A few more random thoughts:

1) I’m not gonna put up any individual track downloads. The idea for the site was to make it a place where people could go and get a decent sized chunk of new and bangin’ music in less than 5 minutes. Your time is valuable- why you wanna jump from site to site to get a track here and a track there? If you already have a song (or 5, or 10) from the track pack, delete them. End of discussion.

2) Some of the music I put up here won’t be new to you, and there are no guarantees it’s even new at all. It’s new to me (at least since the last update). If it’s not new to you, don’t trip- just remember it’s new to somebody out there.

3) A couple new sections, “Recommended Albums” and “Mixtape/LP Downloads” are coming soon. Tryin’ to round things out a little. ;)

4) The tracks I put up are all leaked out by the artists/labels and readily available on the net-  I’m just compiling them for all y’all. But remember- if you like what you hear, make sure you go out and support the artist. Hit them up on iTunes, go see them in concert, buy some of their merchandise. Don’t steal their albums. Buy them, and support them so they can keep on making dope music for years to come.

5) Make sure and subscribe to the site using the RSS feed. I think you do that by clicking the “Subscribe: Entries” link on the right hand side of the main page. It will update you/your browser somehow when I update. That way you don’t have to check the site all the time and get pissed cuz I haven’t put up anything in two weeks!

Keep checkin’ for that update. One.

Current Top 10 Tracks - 05/20/09

Posted in Top 10s on May 20th, 2009 by GMR – Be the first to comment

Some of these tracks are brand new, and some have been out for a minute now. All I know is these 10 tracks are hot, and are currently in heavy rotation (in order):

  1. Hate (f/ N.O.R.E) - Blaq Poet (produced by DJ Premier)
  2. New Wu (f/ Ghostface Killah & Method Man) - Raekwon
  3. I Poke Her Face (f/ Kanye West, Common, & A-Trak) - Kid Cudi
  4. Kinda Like A Big Deal (f/ Kanye West) - Clipse
  5. My Darling - Eminem
  6. Back Again - Reflection Eternal
  7. Champions - The Cool Kids
  8. Who’s Hotter? - Mickey Factz
  9. Laura’s Song - Donwill (of Tanya Morgan)
  10. Homage To Pete Rock (f/ Rapper Big Pooh, Sha Stimuli, & Kurupt) - Focus

Comments:

It’s been a few years since Primo has been involved with a project in which he handles the majority of the production, so heads are fiendin’ for The Blaqprint- Blaq Poet’s highly anticipated album. If the beats on the album are anywhere near as good as Hate, it’ll be one hell of a dope LP.

Method Man KILLS the hook on New Wu, and that “ooooh ooh” sample is so addictive. I Poke Her Face is fun and catchy, and I can’t decide which Kanye verse is nicer- the one on that track, or his alligator souffle 16 on Kinda Like A Big Deal (he’s having quite a 2009, and it’s been almost entirely guest appearances!).

Eminem’s Relapse was a bit of a challenge for me, but his recent leak of 2 leftover cuts from that album, My Darling and Careful What You Wish was a nice surprise. They are both very dope tracks, and right up there with the best cuts off the album.

Reflection Eternal is Back Again (”you can like rap again”), and that’s a good thing. Tanya Morgan are RE fans I’m sure, and that’s evident in the sound of their recent LP Brooklynati. Donwill’s Laura’s Song is a bit of a throwback joint that would be right at home on a tracklisting for Train Of Thought or Resurrection or Black On Both Sides. Feelin’ it!

I don’t know a lot about Mickey Factz, but Who’s Hotter? has a blazin’ beat and he sounds like he’s knows what he’s doin’ on the mic. Focus’ Homage To Pete Rock is another banger, and if you didn’t know any better, you would swear it was crafted by PR himself. And lastly, The Cool Kids are def growing on me, with their bass-heavy, minimalist sound and off kilter drum patterns. Champions is real dope, as is most of their recent free mixtape Gone Fishin‘.

Welcome to That Old Boom Bap!

Posted in Misc on May 20th, 2009 by GMR – Be the first to comment

The idea for this site started with a simple concept. There is so much dope hip hop is out there these days, but it’s hard for people leading busy lives to keep up with it all. On top of that, it’s mind-numbing to wade from site to site, cherry picking a song here and a song there, and then adding them one by one to a playlist or MP3 player.

I wanted a site that would have a selection of hot, new (or at least new to me) music, that I could sample with one click. Hopefully the songs would be tagged properly, and of decent quality. Maybe there even be a sentence or two about each track- something like hiphopsite.com used to do back in the day in their “New Jointz” section. If the site had a new offering once every couple weeks, and I could see when it was updated by subscribing to it, that would be even better.

I couldn’t find a site like that. So I made this one. Hope you discover some new music here that you reminds you of that old boom bap. Now stay tuned…
